Data Management Plan (DMP)

Planning data management helps to structure the collection, organisation, use and opening of data. DMP describes the technical and administrative management of data. It aims to ensure that research materials you collect and use in the research process remain findable and reusable. The data management plan should be considered as a living document and should be updated as often as necessary to reflect what happens during the life of your project. The research organisation's data and publication policy, as well as funders' requirements should be taken into account when drafting a data management plan. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT Libraries) has listed the benefits of managing and sharing data. In addition, the University of Glasgow encapsulates data management plan (DMP) in five questions:

  1. What data will be created?
  2. How will the data be documented and described?
  3. How you will manage ethics and intellectual property rights?
  4. What are the plans for data sharing and access?
  5. What is the strategy for long-term preservation and sustainability?
