Part of every reseachers' information retrieval skills is to keep up with the news and trends of their discipline. There are plenty of databases, services, and different kinds of tools to help follow the news, subscribe to recent articles or, say, receive notifications when your own paper has been cited. Usually it is easy and free for researchers to register for these services, if they are purchased by the university. It could also be useful to follow non-refereed sources, such as social media profiles, publications popularising science, blogs, etc.
