Covidence Guide

Importing references to Covidence

For instructions on how to upload files, see the Covidence help page. On the subpages of this page you will find instructions for transferring from Scopus, PubMed,  and EBSCO (CINAHL).
    Covidence supports three file formats:

  •  RIS
  • PubMed format (nbib format is not supported, see help page)
  • EndNote XML

Click on the Review Summary Import on the front page of the review to import the reference files. It is almost always advisable to import references at the Screen stage (Title and abstract level review). You can also name the database from which the batch of references will be imported. Covidence can import up to 15 000 references at a time. The maximum file size is 50 MB.

Dublicate check in Covidence

  • When loading references, the program automatically performs a duplicate check. This eliminates duplication of results lists.
  • Duplicates can be viewed from the duplicates link. References can be returned for review if necessary.

  • Under the "View details" heading, it is possible to view the details of each import. Here you can see, among other things:
    • the number of duplicates
    • the number of references that have been merged. Separate articles published on the same study can be merged using the Merge function. Merging is also done automatically. Read more about the Merge feature on the Covidence website.
    • The source database of references
    • The "Undo import" button allows you to undo this transfer as long as the review of the references has not yet started.
