Getting started

1. Download and install Zotero and Connector for web browsers.

  • If you are using a university machine, download Zotero from the Software Center and Zotero Connector from the website.

2. If you wish, create an account with Zotero, so you can access the program from multiple computers and back up your Zotero library to the cloud. To do this, log in to Zotero Edit-Settings-Sync.

3. The Word add-on will automatically download when you install Zotero.

  • If the Word add-on is not automatically installed, check in Zotero under Tools- Add-ons that the add-on is active. If this is not enough, install the add-in in Zotero under Edit- Settings- References-Install Microsoft Word Add-in. In addition to Word, Zotero can also be used with other word processors (instructions).

4. Save the Volter OpenURL address in the Zotero settings (Edit->Settings -> scroll down to Locate):

5. Zotero is ready to use!

Zotero provides 300 MB of free storage space for its cloud service, Zotero in the browser. References take up very little space, attachments such as PDF files, images, videos, etc eat up space faster.

  • You can also use Zotero without syncing your attachments to browser-based Zotero. Remember that if you use Zotero this way, your references will not be available or stored in Zotero except on your own computer.
