Reference Management

What are reference management programs?

With reference management programs or reference managers you can easily collect and administer all reference materials (even fulltexts) you need to use in your work.

Reference information can be imported from most of the larger publishers' and service providers' databases straight to a reference management program. Import methods may vary between databases and programs.

You can create in-text citations and bibliographies automatically in your texts with reference manager add-ons in your word processing program.

Of all the different types of reference management programs Turku University Library can instruct and help with the following programs:

  • Mendeley (free version)
  • Zotero (free to use)

NB! RefWorks is no longer available for University of Turku.

A number of different reference management programs have been evaluated by Universitätsbibliothek, Technische Universität München in its 19 page document (available in English and German). Note that the document is from 2020, so changes may have been made to programs and their features.
