  1. Have you followed your degree programme’s guidelines for the content and layout of your thesis and used a possible template?
  2. Make sure that you have not included your student number or social security number anywhere in the thesis. Data security requires that this information is not included in the thesis.

  6. Have you used generative AI in your thesis? Please ensure that any use of AI in your thesis is appropriately mentioned and documented to the required extent.
  7. Did you remember to include a statement of the Turnitin originality check to the bottom of the title page?

The originality of this thesis has been checked in accordance with the University of Turku quality assurance system using the Turnitin OriginalityCheck service.

Or in Finnish: Turun yliopiston laatujärjestelmän mukaisesti tämän julkaisun alkuperäisyys on tarkastettu Turnitin OriginalityCheck -järjestelmällä.

  8. Is your entire thesis in one file (including any attachments, such as images, tables, graphs, research permissions etc.)? Materials and data classified as confidential have to be left out of the version that is examined and published.
  9. Is your thesis converted into a PDF file and titled Firstname_Lastname_thesis, e.g. Smith_John_thesis? Submitting the thesis in the Turnitin assignment

Your supervisor always initiates the UTUKandi process. Therefore, do not take the following steps before you have received an email about the initiation of the process by your supervisor!

If there are several authors for the thesis, only the student marked as the responsible student on the UTUKandi form will receive the instructions for submitting the thesis, submits the work, and fills in the bibliographic information on the form.

1. Access the Moodle course through the link you have received by email from no-reply@utu.fi with title “UTUKandi: Submitting your thesis for examination".

2. . On Moodle, select the Turnitin assignment meant for submitting finished theses (could be e.g. under heading “Submit your finished thesis here”). You can recognise the Turnitin assignment on Moodle from the icon Turnitin icon . The Turnitin assignment refers to the process where the originality and sources of the completed work are checked with the Turnitin plagiarism detection software. The supervisor assesses the originality of the work based on the evaluation report.

3. Click "Submit paper" on the bottom right corner.

4. Fill in the information::

  • Turnitin Assignment Name (same as the name of the file)
  • Upload the PDF file from your computer by clicking the dash lined field or drag the file from your folder with the mouse and drop it in the field.

5. Next, give your consent to the plagiarism check by ticking the box “I consent to save my work in the database of Turnitin...” If you do not give consent, you cannot submit your thesis for examination.

6. Click “Add Submission”.. After a successful submission, you can see the submitted assignment in the table on the page. The report may take some time to generate, in which case the table will read "Pending" in the column indicating the percentage of similarity. You do not have to wait for the report and the percent match to be completed to move on to the next step, but you can do so if you wish.

Note: If you notice any errors in your work after you have already submitted your work to Turnitin which may affect the grading of your work, you may submit a new version after first contacting your supervisor, who can delete your previous submission.

Problems with submission:

If you receive the error message "We are sorry, but we are unable to read the PDF file you submitted", please ensure that the file is not password protected and contains selectable text, and does not contain optically readable images.

In addition, please ensure that the file is named as instructed and does not contain any prohibited characters.
