Moodle course
The supervisor must have a valid Moodle course with a non-archiving Turnitin assignment designated for the submission of bachelor's theses. If the current course intended for this use is over a year old, it is advisable to order a new one. It is not justified to archive theses in Moodle, as they are stored in UTUPub, from where they can, if necessary, be re-submitted to Turnitin. If you need a new Moodle course, refer to the instructions found in Moodle on how to order a course area.
Student registers for the bachelor's thesis course on Peppi
The student registers for the thesis course on Peppi. If the thesis is not included in the student’s personal study plan (PSP, hops in Finnish), they can seek the course on the PSP registrations tab and register for the course.
Maturity test
With the bachelor’s thesis, the student has to complete a maturity test demonstrating their knowledge of the topic of the bachelor’s thesis and their proficiency in Finnish or Swedish. The language of the maturity test is checked only once. A separate maturity test does not have to be written if the contents and language of another maturity test written for another higher education degree have already been assessed. In these cases, the abstract of the thesis functions as the maturity test. More information on the maturity test and language requirements are available on the University’s Regulation on Studies.
The student must register to the maturity test course on Peppi.
The maturity test, where both the contents and language is assessed, will be opened for the student in the Exam system. The faculties have different practices for opening the maturity test so please find out your faculty’s process well beforehand.
A Finnish guideline for opening maturity tests in the Exam system is available on the Exam Libguide.
The supervisor initiates the electronic examination and publication process with the online UTUKandi thesis form after they and the student(s) have together agreed that the work is finished, i.e. there will be no more changes to the thesis. Note that the grade of accepted Bachelor's thesis cannot be raised.
If there are two or more supervisors for the thesis, one of them has to be the responsible supervisor who takes care of initiating the examination process and analysing the Turnitin originality check report (on their Moodle area), fills in the evaluation, and approves the thesis on the UTUKandi form. The additional supervisors do not take any measures on the UTUKandi form but receive information on the progress of the process.
1. Start the process by filling in the UTUKandi form at: https://forms.utu.fi/private/utukandi?lang=en (we recommend using Mozilla Firefox, Chrome or Safari as your browser, image 1). You can select either Finnish or English as the language. You can change the language from the upper right hand side of the form.
2. Select the faculty, department and subject where the thesis is completed by writing it in the field or selecting the correct option from the drop-down menu.
3. Select the correct student from the form’s directory either by clicking the search field or clicking the Search user button.
The easiest way to find a student is writing their UTU username in the field. You can find the student’s UTU username with the UTU email’s address book search or in Peppi.
Note: If the student has an active study right in the Open University it shows automatically when you search for their information. This is an illogicality in the system's interface and does not present a problem for continuing the process.
You can delete your choice by clicking “Clear” next to the field.
5. Find the Moodle course meant for submitting the thesis from the drop-down menu by clicking the search field or the arrow on the right-hand side of the search field, and then select the right course by clicking its name.
All your Moodle courses containing Turnitin assignments are available in the drop-down menu, so choose the right course carefully.
6. If there are two or more supervisors for the thesis, you can also fill in their names on the form. The additional supervisors are notified about the start of the process, but do not have to take any action on the UTUKandi form.
Note: You can add a person who does not have the University's UTU account as an additional supervisor. In the section “Does the extra supervisor have a UTU-user account?” select “No” and fill in the requested information.
7.Click “Save and proceed to confirm” and then you get to check the information on a draft page. Click “Edit” if you notice errors in the information or “Confirm and lock the information” if the information is correct.

As the supervisor, you can follow the initiated process in the list view. Go to https://forms.utu.fi/private/utukandi/list?lang=en and select “Your latest form submissions”
Alternatively, you can click open from the top of each open form “Information about the form” > “List view” > “Your latest form submissions”.
In section “Forms that have steps you can edit” you can view all the processes where there are unfilled parts or drafts on the form which you can edit.
The listing shows where the student is currently at in the process. Through the listing, you can also fill in the supervisor’s sections of the form and therefore do not have to access the form through the link sent to you separately by the system.
